Join us for a book talk & signing of Forty Thorns (Kirk Diken) written by West Virginian, Judy Light Ayyildiz.
Based on the oral memoir of a 91-year-old woman who lived through the fall of the Ottomans and rise of the Turkish Republic, the novel blends past and present within a war-torn love story. Forty Thorns parallels the newly emerging nation – its dramatic upheavals, cultural transformations, and heroes and heroines who built the republic. A chronicle of one brave woman and her singular place in the universal struggle for self-determination and women’s rights, it is also an account of Adalet’s enduring bond with her American daughter-in-law, a writer who is driven to search for the source of Adalet’s strength. Forty Thorns was released in fall 2011 by Remzi Kitabevi, Istanbul in its native English and also in a Turkish translation Kirk Diken.

All attendees are required to read the book prior to the book club meeting. After the discussion, the author will be available for book signings.
The discussion will be moderated by Frances Kazan, an international author, lecturer, producer, and arts supporter, whose published work includes academic writing in “Halide Edib ve Amerika”, as well as historically-inspired fiction in works such as the 1986 “Goodnight Little Sister,” the 2001 “Halide’s Gift”, and the upcoming title “The Dervish.”
About the Author
Author/educator, Judy Light Ayyildiz, conducts writing and women’s seminars in the USA and in Turkey. Internationally published, she has been a literary magazine editor, a writers’ conference founder, a musical director for a student group touring Poland through the Friendship Ambassadors and a director of a USA nationally recognized choir of medical wives. Her ten published books in various genres sprung from her life and teaching. A cross-cultural triumph-over-trauma memoir, Nothing but Time, was 2002 Virginia College Bookstores’ Award Nominee, Virginia Outstanding Book Award Nominee and the runner-up in the Duquesne University Emerging Writers Series. Her third volume of poetry, Mud River, was highly acclaimed by the renowned Fred Chappell and William Packard. Leyla Ismier Ozcengiz translated her 10th book and 1st novel, Forty Thorns into Turkish, titled, Kirk Diken, making Remzi’s best selling list.
